New York City, Chicago, Los Angeles and other cities --
2012 marks the 100th anniversary of the USPS Operation Santa program, which every year offers the public letters to Santa written by underprivileged children.
Anyone who wishs to volunteer at Christmas may pick up Santa letters asking Santa for "a warm coat", "food or clothes" or "shoes for my older brother," written by kids who need a brighter Christmas, and then mail gifts to the child. It's micro-philanthropy, direct from volunteers to children.
Volunteers "Elves" catch the real spirit of Christmas, and the website http://www.BeAnElf.org/ provides the best available guide on how to participate in the USPS Operation Santa program. The site lets people know how and where to get letters to Santa, lists participating postal branches, offers photos and tips for gifts like backpacks, school supplies, new clothes, books, and a small gift for Moms, who the site notes are "often single and living below the poverty line." The Moms sometimes write to Santa, too.
Some volunteer "Elves" feel alone and sad over the holidays, and find comfort and inspiration being part of the program. Others have families and bring their kids to teach them the meaning of Christmas. Some give "Elf parties", where guests bring gifts and wrap them together.
Be An Elf suggests news editors assign reporters to visit an Operation Santa Room at a participating postal branch, and interview and follow real volunteers. We also suggest mentioning this website as a great resource for volunteers. See our full length news release with high resolution photos and video at the website.
Be An Elf's mission is to create public awareness of the USPS program, inspire the public to volunteer at Christmas for it, offer tips on participating, and to post Operation Santa branch addresses every year.
Volunteers can discover the real meaning of Christmas and spirit of Christmas -- and put wide smiles on needy children's faces, come Christmas morning. Be An Elf was founded by Elf Patrick Reynolds, a volunteer for the program.
