Oprah Winfrey profiled former prison inmate turned actor, educator, and author, Ameer Baraka, on her "Blackboard Wars" program. Mr. Baraka has written an incredibly powerful memoir entitled, "The Life I Chose - The Streets Lied to Me" that chronicles his youth of crime and violence in New Orleans' most dangerous, drug infested public housing projects, and his transformation through adversity into an author and a much sought-after speaker on such issues as overcoming dyslexia, self reliance, making proper choices, avoiding a life of crime, and personal achievement against all odds. Mr. Baraka as also an award winning TV and film actor co-starring alongside Emmy and Academy Award winning actors and actresses. He was Angela Basset's love interest on the Emmy Award winning "American Horror Story."
This video is a Fox 8 New Orleans News interview of Mr. Baraka and a New Orleans area middle school principal, Eric Greeley, discussing the immediate, positive, and lasting impact Baraka's book has had on every student at the school, and how the associated curriculum that is taught along with the book is transforming and saving lives. Schools and school systems throughout the country are purchasing a book for every student and they are implementing the associated curriculum at their schools.
