As an increasingly competitive industry, the rap game currently demands more creativity and drive than ever before from artists seeking to break into the spotlight. While it has become historically cliché for rappers to refer to themselves as businesses, it is now an actual necessity that an emcee to has a firm grasp on their branding and marketing, in addition to having mic skills. Yo Gotti, an emcee that came up at the tail end of the mixtape hustle era, sat down to chop it up with us on how he was successfully able to build his own brand as an independent artist.

Like the many Memphis acts that have come before, Yo Gotti attributes his city as being the catalyst that drove him to the success he has reached thus far with his CMG label.

Carrying on his city's tradition of showing support to the hometown's own, Gotti has taken South Memphis's newcomer, Zed Zilla, under his wing, teaming up to expand the River City 's flow into the greater parts of the map. Having already set a high precedence with a vast series of Cocaine Muzik mixtapes, four full-length independent albums, and numerous track features from artists like Lil Wayne, Rick Ross, and J. Cole, Yo Gotti is finally gearing up to release his debut studio album Live from the Kitchen, due out this January on Polo Ground / RCA Records.
