This is a comparison test of the Line Audio OM1 versus CM3 microphones. Test parameters include:
One pair of OM1 mics, one pair of CM3 mics, 14 cm apart, 65 degrees apart, same mic stand and set up, Clavinova piano playing a preset song, Focusrite 2i4 usb interface, Reaper DAW. Note: OM1 is omni mic, CM3 is cardioid mic.
Since the CM3 is less sensitive than the OM1, I needed to add 3 db to the CM3 recording afterwards to make the two recordings identical in volume. The specs say a 2 db difference, but in my real-world test, I needed 3 db.
The Clavinova is a digital piano. It's not the last word in sound quality, but it has a completely repeatable sound, hence it's good for quick AB tests.
The two mics are very similar in sound quality. But if you listen closely with headphones, you may hear subtle differences. One of these two mics sounds just like what I heard when I was in the room doing the recording. Yes, it was the OM1...not surprising since all other factors equal, an omni will outperform a cardioid. If you want to reject sounds coming from the rear, it costs you something.
