Remake Studio session of Phil Spector's wall of sound. Real audio output. Written by Phil Spector, Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil. Recorded at the Conservatory of Amsterdam.
Part of ‘The legendary recording technique of Phil Spector stripped’ Master Thesis. Which can be read at http://new-hansen.com/?smd_process_do...
Phil Spector (1939) had a enormous influence on pop music throughout the second half of the 20th century. While working in the Gold Star studios in the 1960’s, he developed a special recording technique called the wall of sound. It was basically a formula that made use of harmony and music technology in a way to mask definition in the whole. By doing so, it became difficult to distinguish instruments from one another as they form a certain density. Especially listening to ’Walking in the Rain’ and ‘Be my Baby’ (The Ronettes -1963/1964) we can clearly hear this effect.
This research is about reconstructing the wall. What will happen when we have a look beyond the wall of sound? This article will explain how Spector build his wall, but more interesting; it will be able to show you. By having recorded all instruments together in exactly the way Spector did more than fifty years ago, it now possesses all the ‘bricks’ to rebuild the wall or… controlling each part separately to define the instruments and see it become a whole. With this valuable information gathered, it is finally able to answer the question: ‘Is it still possible to recreate Spector’s wall of sound with today’s technology?’
