WAREHAM, MA― A 16-year-old boy wearing headphones suffered a head injury when he was hit by a train in Wareham Friday evening, police officials said.

The boy was hit by a Massachusetts Coastal Railroad train in the area of Main Avenue around 4:15 p.m., and was airlifted to Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.

Wareham police officials said the boy had been wearing headphones while walking along the tracks when he was hit from behind.

Witnesses said the train's whistle blew to warn the boy, but the headphones may have prevented him from hearing it.

The boy was conscious when he was airlifted to Mass. General. They say he suffered a head injury though his condition was unknown Friday night.

The train track that the boy was hit on runs parallel to to Cranberry Highway. (WBZ-TV)
