Want to learn how to surf better? Learn from the world's best through Surfline's Pro Tips, a complete how-to series created to improve your surfing skills. In this episode, we go over backside tail slides with Dane Reynolds.
Hi I’m Dane. Today I'm going to teach you how to do a Backside Tail Slide. I think for a Backside Tail Slide you want pretty steep wave, kind of pocket, but not too powerful and hucking otherwise you're going to eat it at the bottom. From the bottom turn your stomping on your back foot trying to project up into the lip. As you hit the lip, pretty much the moment where you rotate your shoulders, put all your weight on your front foot and just kick that back foot around so that it releases and slides off the lip.
You just want to hit right at that little sweet spot where the barrels here, lips here, it's kind of soft out on the shoulder right there in the sweet spot. Timing is pretty crucial. If you hit it too late you're going to get tossed out into the flats and if you hit it too early it's just gonna look forced and ugly. The key point here is not to go into reverse though because you gotta show some control.
