The fall Massachusetts Institute of Technology Dept. of Urban Studies & Planning public health and planning practicum class conducted a micro-level food environment survey to study local access to healthier food options in the North End neighborhood of Springfield, MA. They partnered with community members and middle school youth to document availability and ask local stakeholders about their opinions about nutrition, health and food options in their community. Local small corner store owner David Feliciano spoke with us about the challenges of small vendors in offering low priced healthy snacks and what it's like to be a small business owner.
