In a special agreement between the composer and me, here is "Meernacht", premiering for the first time on Youtube. It is a stirring piece, alongside which I emerge after years of absence.
I was there last night in Prague in Saint Salvator's Church, a seeking face, watching, feeling this being performed. Layers of night pencilled between the listeners and the music as the choir's singing enveloped every space and receded into memory. The church stewed in anticipation--this is what we were awaiting. My eyes quivered.
To me the song's story was one of vastness, one of innermost kindling, one of searching... a dive into what time will bestow upon us. Our future lies in the tremulous hands of fate, and I suddenly felt all at sea, overcome by my humanity. Sea Night. The depths beckon to us. The enormity is here with us. Will we hearken to its calls? Will we salvage and savour its profundity?
Song: Meernacht from "I Eat The Sun and Drink The Rain" Composer: Sven Helbig
Waves that glimmer from afar, Trembling beneath clear sea night, The dark year’s foreboding Briefly lit by memories of light.
Magical tones, Beautiful, eternal sound, Never silenced or Called to ground.
Faith rises from all shores, On stars, great myths projected, Where the view lightens the nothingness, Do my thoughts ascend.
