Annemieke Farenhorst, Director of H2O Create, University of Manitoba presents examples of the differences in water quality between piped and cistern distribution systems in First Nations communities in Manitoba, as well as the water quality implications of having no running water in a home. When evaluating water quality, standard measurements such as the presence of Escherichia coli (E. coli) were taken into account. More advanced techniques were utilized to quantify the presence of disinfection by-products such as trihalomethanes, and for examining the presence of bacteria having antibiotic resistant genes.
