Montreal Surf Bum: You guys want to go surfing? Eagar Bros: Surf'n in the city? No way! Montreal Surf Bum: You betcha! On a stationary wave in the St. Lawrence. It's sweet! Eagar Bros: We've got to see this to believe it. Lets do it!
And that was that. Next thing we knew we were hang'n loose on the St. Lawrence River in downtown Montreal, catching a wave right in the heart of the city; and a great wave at that. This fabulous phenomenon is caused by a rock formation in the river that creates a never-ending, totally surfable wave. You could catch the wave and surf it all day if it wasn't for the line-up of other surfers waiting for their turn to surf!
We were tipped off about this hidden gem in the center of Montreal by a local surf bum, Hugo Lavictoire, owner of KSF (Kayak Sans Frontières) the only surf company in Montreal. He started his company in 1994 and offers surfing, kayaking and stand-up paddling both on this wave and at many other locations around the province. Living in the city is great but people are usually stuck in an urban jungle separated by miles of traffic choked road away from good surf. This is not the case in Montreal. The city is blessed with some great outdoor water sports right in the heart of the city.
Our day on the river was fantastic. We met a bunch of other fun people enjoying the fresh air, water and sun like us. There were some Montrealers, but there were also guys and girls from Israel, U.S. and Brazil, all surfing and kayaking on the river. Hugo was stoked at the amount of fun we were having and though he's surfed the wave a thousand times he never gets tired of an afternoon on the water.
By early evening the sun was setting but everyone was still there catching the wave. It wasn't until darkness had swallowed the river that we finally called it quits.
Beginner or pro this wave is good for all. Give Hugo a call and he'll sort you out. Get out there and give it a try. You'll love it!
