An overthrown ball from the outfield missed two cut off men. Derek Jeter ran from short all the way to the first base line to catch a dribbling ball where he did a barehanded flip home to get out Jason Giambi and protect their 1-0 lead over the A's. The Yankees would hold off Oakland for the rest of the game and escape a first round series defeat.
