Digital cameras can only see black and white, no matter what, it's how they work. They use filters to figure out colours (yes, your digital camera does that too), but using filters reduces the detail and accuracy of an image, and takes longer to transmit, and they don't give a crap about transmitting "pretty" images, they cared about making sure their rover was in a good state. Seriously I want to punch so many commenters on these Curiosity updates for being so ignorant.

curiosity can take 720p 10fps video and store it in a 8GB buffer memory, sending the video back takes time and power though!
