Windows Update cannot currently check for updates, because the service is not running. Caused by large drive upgrade or driver issue.
This issue happened to me after I upgraded my drive from a 300GB to a 1TB Toshiba drive. Note I am using Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit version on an HP laptop. Here is the link for the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver (IRST) from HP:

If that does not work try this: IRST for Desktop Boards STOR_Win7_8_11.7.0.1013_PV.exe , dated 12/06/2012 ver 11.7.0.1013 Make sure you click on (Which file should I download) before you download the file.

Please pick the correct driver for your operating system Windows 7, 8 etc. and the correct architecture 32 bit or 64 bit. If you don't know which you have, Intel has a how to on that on this same page too.
