Namik Tan, Turkey's ambassador to the United States, speaks of the volatility of the region, noting his country's borders with Syria, Iraq and Iran, in this talk presented at the University of Virginia. The present situation in Syria poses particular challenges and Ambassador Tan says Turkey is making strong calls requesting that Syria stop attacking its own people.
Separate from security issues, Ambassador Tan also spoke to Turkey's economic growth and to the country's efforts to join the European Union. To this point the continuing economic uncertainty in the EU has not dissuaded Turkey from seeking membership.
Namik Tan's visit to U.Va. was sponsored by the Office of the Vice Provost for International Programs and the Center for International Studies.
