iFreefall demonstrates how to fire a cannon in his new server, Minecraft: The Revolution.
Cannons consist of 3 parts: Cobblestone base, a button, and a dispenser.
The dispenser is faced towards the direction you want the cannon to shoot, and the cobblestone is placed behind it, and the button is placed behind the cobblestone. Pretty simple actually. The mechanics of the cannon, not so simple.

The cannon consists of 3 factors as to how you will hit your target: Angle of trajectory, velocity (m/s), and fuse length. The trajectory can go anywhere from 0 degrees to a 45 degree angle, thus giving it more of less distance if you want. The velocity is the speed at which the shot will travel, thus the m/s. In the game of minecraft, 1 block = 1 meter, since the game is made by a Swedish developer. Therefore, if your cannon is firing at a 0 degree angle, at a 1m/s velocity, and it has an 80 tick fuse (10 ticks = 1 second), it will hypothetically go 8 meters before explosion. The amount of math needed to use these things are astronomical.

Also, you CAN put these on boats with Movecraft, so i think i'll implement naval battles as well :)
