CONFIRMED. It was the Red Bull Air Force: http://redbullairforce.com/2010/12/si...

Please watch in HD! :-)
Here's 4 pictures I took with my Nikon D50 @ 70mm, f/4.5, ISO 1600. It was a 0.8 second shutter for the first 2; 0.6 second shutter for the last 2.

Check out the "SILVER SURFER UFO - Santa Monica" video for full coverage and links to all other sightings caught on video or photograph.

No idea what it was, but it appeared to be a fireball or meteor. You can even see it's reflection in the water on the beach! It was moving pretty slowly and appeared to slow down as it was descending. Then it appeared to spin slightly or corkscrew, then I lost it among the lights of Santa Monica and the Pacific Palisades behind it and I assumed it fizzled out.

The timestamp on the photo files is 5:25pm. I just compared the clock on the camera to the current time and it was in sync to the minute, so it definitely was some time between 5:24pm and 5:26pm PST.

Timestamps (to the second/PST):
Photo #1: 17:25:10
Photo #2: 17:25:12
Photo #3: 17:25:22
Photo #4: 17:25:24

There is a photo between 2 and 3 to account for the 10-second gap, but it was far too blurry to distinguish.

Disclaimer: I don't claim to believe in aliens or not. I use the term "Unidentified Flying Object" in the strictest sense, as I had no idea what the hell this flying thing was.
