Saab's second aircraft project was the twin-engined B 18 bomber. It test flew for the first time in 1942 and deliveries to the Swedish Air Force commenced in 1944. Despite remaining in service until 1959 not a single example of this aircraft was saved. In 1979 however, a B 18 known as "Red D" was salvaged from the sea bed just outside Härnösand, Sweden, where it had performed an emergency landing in 1946 and then sank through the ice. Members of Östergötlands Flyghistoriska Sällskap have dedicated many hours to the restoration of this aircraft.
