Diablo 1 has the most authentic "diabolical" atmosphere, I think. From the moment you enter that cursed church, all the way down to Diablo's lair, evil is all around you in a pretty palpable way. The whole game was made to be as creepy as possible.

You can tell from the artwort from D1 to D3 that Diablo 3 was going the wrong and WoWish way. Diablo 3 is not a bad game, but its not a diablo game. Diablo has a unique setting to gameplay, but I didnt feel it at all in diablo 3

The Diablo franchise NEEDS TO GET BACK TO ITS ROOTS. Cut the dev's or fire that idiot who can't draw an a character without putting ridicoulus cartoony shit on it.

Vedran Petranovic The problem with D3 is that they changed the art style with no apparent reason. You may like it and that's fine, but it is not consistent with Diablo's true style. Look at D3's style, everything is more exaggerated and kind of chunky. Pieces of armor that are huge, or extremely big weapons, clearly influenced by Warcraft visual style. Whereas Diablo 1 and 2 had a more realistic feel in its designs, which combined with its dark theme made it more immersive and is one of the things that captivated fans to begin with.

What abstraction are you on about? There were so few games back then. Abstraction was possible. Nowadays it's extremely hard to create an abstraction in a game, plus given this is 3rd Diablo game... You seem to be the one not understanding the words, study the word Graphics little more. I have countless hours on D1,D2 and D3 aswell. Marked my childhood. You keep stating your opinion and forcing it onto me, what I was talking is that you can't say graphics are better, because they are not, it's like saying ''omg my gtx 480 is sooo much better than 1080'', Nvidia should get back to it's roots, shut the fuck up. Diablo 1 although is better than D3, but give D3 a break, you probably whine about everything new nowadays. Probably haven't even played RoS.

It's a shame the original vision was so dramatically altered. The original Diablo was a an amazing gothic horror masterpiece. Afterward, the game progressively became just another generic Dungeons & Dragons fantasy game series. They removed the Satanic references to sanitize it for the mass market and, ultimately, lost its soul in the process. Now, the Diablo brand is so muddied that it's nearly identical to Blizzard's other universe - Warcraft.

+Kizer5Red You are missing the point, nothing is wrong with that, problem is they didnt put it in D3 so various groups of various butthearts wouldnt be offended by a dark horror gothic game...excuse fucking me

well considering the translation of "diablo", also the origins of the names baal and mephisto, you would expect the game to have Jewish and Christian themes and allusions to the Religions. What is wrong with that? Religion is very important, these games are literally about the eternal war (or "conflict) of Heaven VS Hell.

They toned down the horror and darkness in order to probably make it appeal to a bigger audience. The result is that it looks generic now and not true to the original diablo theme. I waited 14 years for D3, most anticipated game ever for me, and I never bothered to play it based on the initial auction house downfall, loot issues/lack of replay, and the artwork/theme. If I wanted fantasy I'd go with WoW, which I've always thought looked great. In fact, I still think WoW looks great, dated and all, for its fantasy graphics. But diablo without that dark horror theme isn't diablo. Half measures don't work here. Don't want a dark fantasy looking game, I want diablo. If they ever make D4 I hope they return to making it as dark, twisted, and frightening as possible. D2 Baal still frightens me

I agree, as an individual game, Diablo 3 is ok and can be fun, but as a Diablo sequel it falls way too short. Changing the art style to a more cartoonish one is a decision I will never understand and it's an insult to the previous games at some point. Also, they retconned unnecessarily, and the story they came up with was really really bad, as well as constantly taunting bosses that kill all the thrill of fighting them. I mean, seriously, Azmodan's head appearing all over the place to say "Ah you are destroying my army but I don't need it anyway" is so lame... Making Aidan the son of Leoric also made the story inconsistent with Diablo 1 and doesn't add any kind of value to the story. That was one of the most annoying things about the story of D3 and I can't believe how they could even do something like that. It feels so cheap, like they couldn't come up with something truly original. Also, female Diablo was a huge dissapointment, not scary nor powerful looking at all. And that was the prime evil? Finally, the expansion felt so forced, Malthael becoming the angel of death just because seems like an easy way of providing more gameplay. Imperius being a complete asshole to the heroes who are saving his ass also was kind of annoying. I'll always wonder how would've Diablo 3 been had the original developers from Blizzard North finished their version.

+Legion Geth Well.. no matter whether TL2 sucks, because the guy which was the main developer in Blizzard North left it.

+YukiGibson leave it in the middle? well, can't say d3's atmosphere fits the atmosphere of the sequel but its not that bad man. only major thing I can complain about d3 is the absence of the Necromancer. that chicken wielding, frog summoning which faggot is a joke.

Hawkeye Gough tell me please how is that so? The story is awful and inconsistent with D1 (the warrior 'Aidan' being son of Leoric), and the artsyle was changed to a cartoonish one with no reason whatsoever. That, for me, is enough to consider it not a true Diablo game. It is very evident that the game was developed mainly by another team than the one who created the first two games. You can look up some screenshots from the original Blizzard North's project of D3 and see the huge difference in artsyle which would've probably been truly consistent to the Diablo dark realistic style.
