Charles Morerod is Dean of the Philosophy department at the Pontifical University of Saint Thomas Aquinas in Rome and a theology professor. Hes a philosopher with a passion for theology, and a theologian with a passion for philosophy.

Its a combination Benedict XVI considered ideal when naming him secretary of International Theological Commission.

Fr. Charles Morerod
Secretary General, International Theological Commission
The Commission was founded by Pope Paul VI, in 1969. It seems that he wanted to go on what with what happened during the Council Vatican II, namely a collaboration between the Pope and theologians, or during the Council between the bishops and theologians.

One of the first members of this commission was then theology professor Joseph Ratzinger.

Since it began its work, the commission has published 24 ambitious documents on topics like interpretation of the holy scriptures, the existence of limbo, the Church and past faults, and more recently on the existence of universal ethics.

But they dont always make their studies public.

Fr. Charles Morerod
Secretary General, International Theological Commission
If, for instance, the Pope thinks that a question should be studied and wants to know what theologians thinks about questions nowadays he can ask. Or the member of the Commission can think, it happens some times, Well, perhaps it would be good to speak about that; if we can suggest it.

Though the commission is presided over by the prefect of the Doctrine of Faith, the secretarys responsibility is still important because hes the person in charge of directly coordinating the tasks of the commission.

During these dates, the Vatican is getting in touch with some 30 theologians from different countries and schools all over the world to invite them to participate in the next commission. During the course of the next five years, theyll help the pope and the congregations of the Vatican to resolve some of the most delicate theological questions.
