It's 1862 and the Victoria Turf Club in Melbourne, Australia has just announced the highest stakes horse race ever. Young horse handler Dave Power sets off on the journey of a lifetime to take Archer, a top contender for the race, across the 600 miles of rugged, lawless territory that stretches between his home town and Melbourne. At last the pair arrives, but the jockey hired to ride Archer suffers an unfortunate accident. If Archer is to race, Dave must ride him. In a triumphant victory, Dave and Archer become the first winners of the famous race known worldwide today as the Melbourne Cup.
