Greensboro’s Running of the Balls draws thousands for one-of-a-kind 5K race.
More than 3,000 locals raced under the magical Greensboro Christmas light balls at the annual Running of the Balls race Saturday night, Dec. 12, 2015.
The one-of-a-kind event and the magical display was captured via drone-mounted video. The Greensboro neighborhood of Sunset Hills features some 3,000 tree light balls – spheres of chicken wire wrapped in holiday lights that make a breath-taking holiday display. The Running of the Balls, in its fourth year, is a 3.4-mile course through Sunset Hills.
Runners decked in jingle bells and wacky, lighted costumes wove their way through the course, laughing with friends and dancing to holiday tunes.
This year’s Running of the Balls collected more than $40,000 as well as food in donations for a Second Harvest Food Bank and Greensboro Urban Ministries. Since the neighborhood started collecting money and non-perishable items eight years ago, it has raised enough to feed more than one million meals to those in need.
