Last week (September 1, 2011) we saw the most amazing and rare to be seen behaviour by Blue Whales. They were breaching and exceptionally active, apparently this rarely seen behaviour was all part of a mating ritual. 3 males trying to impress 1 female - 4 whales in total. Not only were they breaching up out of the water, but they were rolling around in the water so you could see their fins also. Dolphins were swimming along with them, jumping out of the water and over them as they breached up. It was incredible to see the interaction between these large whales and significantly smaller dolphins. The most AMAZING display of whale watching ever!

Some interesting facts:

Blue whales are the largest animals ever known to have lived on Earth. These magnificent mammals rule the oceans at up to 100 feet (30 meters) long and weigh upwards of 200 tons. Their tongues alone can weigh as much as an elephant. About 100 people can fit in a blue whale's mouth - Wow!

Their heart is the size of a Mini Cooper and can weigh close to 2,000 pounds (907 kg). Its heartbeat can be detected from two miles away and a human can easily crawl through its major arteries.

The spray from a blue whale's blowhole is almost as tall as a three-story building (30 feet or 9 m). A toddler can fit into its blowhole!

Blue Whales are currently classified as endangered on the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Red List
