Catelyn's Song
(c) Michael Kelly, 2011

The bards are quite rare in the northlands
Few travellers dare brave the cold
So news from the south comes but rarely
And most of such tidings are old
But when there are words that are urgent
The maesters put parchment to pen
And fasten their news to a raven
Oh, would that one ne'er come again

(CHORUS:)
Dark wings, dark words out of an ashen sky
A harbinger of sorrow, on the wind, grim tidings fly
Dark wings, dark words over the hills and sea
My grief is borne on ravens' wings and the word they bring of thee

The first bird was sent by my sister
A message of woe for to bring
That the lions had murdered her husband
And had now set their eyes on the king
But there's more than one love had been stolen
For mine with the king has set forth
To serve as his hand in the southlands
While I must remain in the north

But far worse was the bird that came after
Its news turned my heart to a stone
For the royal bells rang out in mourning
And the king would not perish alone
For now my true love was a captive
Restrained in a windowless cell
And all of the lions cried 'treason!'
And they'd soon cry for his head as well

(Chorus)

And then in the chaos that followed
The kingdom collapsed into war
And now I hear word that my eldest
Will march southward to settle the score
They've already made me a widow
And I'll see the lions in hell
Before I allow this to happen
And lose my son to battle as well

My son would not listen to counsel
His men are all firm in their course
I've journeyed the southlands for nothing
Now I learn to my greatest remorse
That our home has been sacked in our absence
By a turncoat once kept as a ward
And he's taken the sons that I left there
And he's put both of them to the sword

(Chorus)

Now my whole life has crumbled to ruin
My children are all in the grave
Save for one that will surely soon join them
And the one that the lions enslaved
If only I'd ne'er seen a raven
I'd not be so burdened with care
I know ignorance isn't far better,
But the knowing is too much to bear

(Chorus)

My grief is borne on ravens' wings and the word they bring of thee
