The latest display of the culture of flattery (拍馬屁文化) that permeates the Chinese Nationalist Party (中國國民黨) under Chairman/President Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) came to light in the past couple of days. The October 30, 2009 edition of Talking Show (大話新聞) -- hosted today by Lu Huei-min (呂惠敏) -- brought us the details:

A government web site called "Taiwan 99" (台灣九九) -- "coincidentally" echoing the third word of Ma's name in Hanzi -- was put online. One of the activities promoted was a bike ride (鐵馬行). The second Hanzi word of that one "just happens" to be Ma's family name.

See the site(s) here:

Here's more coverage in the Liberty Times:

The excuses officials made for that web site are laughable in light of all the other similar things that have happened since Ma took office:
1) Bottled water featuring a jogger (Ma's hobby) and packaged in 520 ml bottles (Ma's inauguration date was 5/20/2009)
2) A bridge in Taipei County's Yonghe City was decorated with *9* golden horses.
3) On the one-year anniversary of Ma's inauguration, the Taiwan Tobacco and Liquor Corp. (TTL, 台灣菸酒公司) used over NT$300,000 in public funds on a half-page newspaper ad praising Ma's "erudition" (博學), "extraordinary ability" (宏才), and "love of Taiwan." Read more about numbers 1 - 3 here:

4) Ma uses the door reserved for "the emperor" and is greeted by the bayi (八佾) dance for "the emperor" during a ceremony at Taipei's Confucius Temple:

5) The kids' Mandarin Daily (國語日報) newspaper published an article about Ma titled 「陽光健康的台灣總統馬英九」 ("Sunny [as in 'positive'], healthy Taiwan President Ma Ying-jeou"), glorifying him for the eyes of the yet-unpoliticized audience. More about that here:

During the latest conflict over the lifting of a ban on US beef (whose main point is *not* the beef but rather the internal organs, especially brain and spinal cord, because it is inevitable that these things will end up in places where the consumer can't know about them), Ma's "satisfaction" rating has dropped 14 percentage points in a poll by the pro-KMT China Times:

Ma is out of touch.

There's also a huge important question hanging over this matter: What did the Ma government get from the US in exchange?

Pay close attention to those behind the curtain!
