"Afraid" (害怕 hài pà ) is a Groovi Pauli & Friends song from their 2009 album "Mandarin Chinese Songs for Kids." It is part of a series of songs about feelings. We hope you don't get too frightened by this song!
It is written in a bilingual style with direct translation, an approach we altered on subsequent albums in favor of simple all-Chinese lyrics.
This music video was shot by Groovi Pauli & Friends on the spectacular, quiet beaches of Cebu, The Philippines in 2009. Technically, this video is different from our more "polished" recent music videos, such as "Halloween". Not to worry, as the meaning of the lyrics comes through, enhanced by the video and photos (from Creative Commons).
The lyrics are as follows, including pinyin (in parentheses) as reference for Chinese characters:
A: 你怎么了? (nǐ zěn me le "What's with you?") B: 害怕. (hài pà "Scared.") A: Scared? 你怕什么? (nǐ pà shén me "What are you scared of?") B: 我只是拍 (wǒ zhǐ shì pà "I'm just scared." ) A: Let me tell you.
有人怕高 (yǒu rén pà gāo "some people are afraid of heights") 有人怕黑 (yǒu rén pà hēi "some people are afraid of the dark") 有人怕蟲 (yǒu rén pà chóng "some people are afraid of insects") 有人怕密蜂 (yǒu rén pà mì fēng "some people are afraid of bees") 我害怕 (wǒ hài pà "I'm scared") 不用怕! (bú yòng pà "Don't be scared.")
有人怕坐飞机 (yǒu rén pà zuò fēi jī "some people are afraid of flying") 有人怕狗 (yǒu rén pà gǒu "some people are afraid of dogs") 有人怕怪物 (yǒu rén pà guài wù "some people are afraid of monsters") 有人怕讲话 (yǒu rén pà jiǎng huà "some people are afraid of speaking") 我害怕 (wǒ hài pà "I'm scared") 不用怕! (bú yòng pà "Don't be scared.")
A: 不用拍。(bú yòng pà "Don't be afraid.") 你要勇敢。(nǐ yào yǒng gǎn) Be brave. B: 好了。我会勇敢. (hǎo le. wǒ huì yǒng gǎn "OK. I will be brave.")
