In this presentation we offer a glimpse of the physical and mental skills required for hand and power hammer forging. Then we witness the struggles and triumph of a beginner learning to swing a hammer effectively in order to accomplish a rudimentary task.

Our shop is in Petersburg Virginia. We have at our shop many used German blacksmith anvils for sale. When someone visits us we show them the blacksmith shop. Then I take a look at how they swing a hammer and offer tips just like what you see in this video. In my opinion nothing is more important than proper technique. One time I had a mother complain to me that all her boys did at my shop was hammer. Obviously she didn't realize that her complaint was a high compliment to me. In the beginning, in the middle, and in the end blacksmithing is about hammering! Of course the process itself is at once an athletic and musical event. After the last blow is taken the tale of what occurred is written indelibly in shape and surfaces of the finished work.

For 43 years now we hand forged decorative ironwork: : http://www.greenwoodironworks.com/
