The Faculty of Education at University of Massachusetts held this portrait unveiling ceremony for Dwight during Homecoming week on 27 October 2012. Dwight served as Dean of Education at UMass during the transformational years of 1968 - 1975. An earlier portrait of Dwight as Dean disappeared from Furcolo Hall sometime in the 1980's in what was said to be a fraternity prank. During my years as a grad student at UMass, I would sometimes see the plaque that still hung beneath the empty space where the portrait should be. I decided to commission a new portrait to return Dwight's likeness to its rightful place. Although it has taken 20 years, this ceremony finally fulfills that dream. Unfortunately, I couldn't attend the unveiling, so they filmed it for me. The ceremony, especially the personal testimonies at the conclusion, reflect what a wonderful and profound influence Dwight has had on so many people's lives. Current Dean Christine McCormick read some excerpts from my tribute to Dwight for the occasion. The full text of that tribute is here:
