With so much information on the Internet, knowing where and how to look is vital. The following tips will help you find what you are looking for.
Tip 1.
Start by selecting appropriate keywords. Be specific, use descriptive keywords and use synonyms for more focused search results.
Tip 2.
Play around with the word order. Entering your keywords in a different order will deliver different results.
Tip 3.
Use “quotation marks” to search for phrases.
Tip 4
After your results are displayed, use the ‘Search Tools’ button to filter the results by location and timeframe.
Tip 5.
You can also use the ‘Images’, ‘News’, ‘Videos’, ‘Maps’, and ‘More’ buttons for more specific search results.
Tip 6.
Search websites or organisations for expert information on a particular topic. For example, Statistics New Zealand or government department websites.
Tip 7.
Double check any information from the internet to ensure it is accurate and from a reliable source. The website URL can help. For example, .gov and .edu are trustworthy websites administered by government ministries and higher education institutions.
The last letters of the URL tell you the website’s country of origin.
Tip 8.
Use our Creative Commons guide for information on how to find, use and attribute materials, including images, music and video.
Tip 9
Google Scholar is a useful resource that links to many free resources.
To access full text articles from the Unitec Library using Google Scholar, you need to add library links. To do this, click on ‘Settings’ on the Google Scholar homepage and then click on ‘Library Links’.
The Library staff are here to help so feel free to contact us if there is anything we can do for you.
Thanks for watching. Please check out our other online tutorials for more tips on how to get the most from your library.
