Abstract:
This webinar will examine the role of the social worker in the prevention, identification and treatment of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders. The webinar will offer a discussion on how the social worker can utilize alcohol screening and brief intervention with their female clients to prevent them from having an alcohol-exposed pregnancy. This webinar will provide what we currently know in how to identify clients who may present with symptoms of having a potential FASD. Dr. Tenkku Lepper will discuss what is currently available for helping the social worker in treatment programs for those who are diagnosed with having a diagnosis of any of the conditions along the spectrum of disorders. This webinar will outline the primary roles for the social worker at both the micro and macro levels.

Objectives:
Participants will:
Understand ways in which the social worker may help women clients reduce or quit alcohol use and prevent them from having a child with an FASD.
Learn how the social worker can identify clients who may they suspect may have an FASD.
Learn ways in which the social worker can use current evidence-based interventions to treat or improve the lives of those living with an FASD and their caregivers.

Short Bio

Dr. Tenkku Lepper is Associate Research Professor and Director for Research in both the School of Social Work and the Master in Public Health program at the University of Missouri. She is the PI and Director for the national Mental and Reproductive Health FASD Practice Implementation Center (MRPIC) funded by the CDC. Dr. Tenkku Lepper is also PI for an intervention treatment program for youth and young adults with FASDs. In addition, Dr. Tenkku Lepper is the Chair of the NOFAS Affiliate Network and is President of NOFAS-Missouri.
