Historically, fishermen on Lake Victoria have relied on the capture of wild catfish fingerlings along the lake shores to use as bait for Nile perch, a prized market species. Rather than continue to endanger the population of wild catfish, AquaFish Collaborative Research Support Program (CRSP) has developed a sustainable alternative in the propagation and marketing of pond-raised catfish fingerlings in Kenya. Building these new markets using CRSP science puts sustainability hand-in-hand with increased economic capacity for Kenya's small-scale farmers.
