A fairly recent one. This song comes from a bitter place. It's a response to the popular "Footprints" poem, in which Jesus tells a weary shoreline traveler that he has carried him through all the hardest times in the traveler's life. The idea has always seemed strange to me - if Jesus carried him, why does he remember those times in his life as the worst?
------------------
I can't recall
The times you carried me, but
I remember loneliness
My path is long
Every step has been my own
Leading up my hill of skulls

Ever after unto death
To strive in hopelessness
To languish wasted and defamed
Sifting through the ash of dreams
This heart is what it seems
Wounded, suffering, ashamed
A sojourner in darkness

Years are waves
Signs of me disintegrate
The blood I've lost is washed away
Scars are left
Upon my body, permanent
And nothing you can claim to bear

Ever after unto death
To strive in hopelessness
To languish wasted and defamed
Sifting through the ash of dreams
This heart is what it seems
Wounded, suffering, ashamed
A sojourner in darkness
