I woke up this morning and recorded this before I even had a cup of coffee. In the early 90's I worked in a refugee camp in Thailand. A psychiatrist would come to our camp about once a month, in the evening he would get drunk and sing this song. I never knew, who wrote it or anything about it. Dr Wes was a brilliant Dr and a very nice guy, but he always seemed very uncomfortable in his body. He was a very big guy, with terrible acne and bright red hair, he also had a horrible stutter that only disappeared when he sang. Months later he killed himself and I lost this song until I rediscovered it last month. Joan Baez wrote this song when Janis Joplin died. Janis was bullied alot when growing up for being fat and having bad acne. Her torment even continued into college and a fraternity even nominated her "ugliest man on campus". That poor girl. Knowing all this now, makes me think of Wes and how he must have really identified with Janis and this tune.
