There can be few out there who have not heard of this song. Released in 1974 (in the UK) this is the first track from the album Kimono My House. This Town... reached number two in the UK charts and although I cannot be certain I believe it was held off from top spot by either Abba's Waterloo or the equally execrable Sugar Baby Love by the Rubettes.
Sparks continue to write and release tracks upto the present day and numerous people have cited them as being an influence............
Most people will recognise the jerky dancing of the lead singer Russell Mael and his brother the Hitleresque keyboardist Ron Mael, but for the record the other people that contributed to this perfomance are; Martin Gordon, bassist, Norman 'Dinky' Diamond on drums (who committed suicide in 2004) and Adrian Fisher, guitarist (who died in 2000).
This video is taken from the Musikladen programme which aired in Germany between 1972 and 1984 - think of it as a sort of teutonic Old Grey Whistle Test.
This is a wonderful song and seems to have transcended much of the cliched nostalgia that surrounds much of the seventies. This is a must have amongst my music videos (if only because when I was little I was terrified of Ron Mael).
