Israeli Contemporary Players conducted by Ilan Volkov, with vocalist Etty BenZaken, perform Eitan Steinberg's "Dancing Memory Fish" (2012)
Text by Harold Schimmel alongside children folksongs
Recorded live at the premier, Tel Aviv Museum of Art 9/6/12

About the piece:
Many of my compositions deal with remembering and forgetting -- cultures, places, people. Sometimes the pieces deal directly with a specific memory, as a programmatic idea; other times they do it indirectly through a dialogue with folk and early musical materials, or through the question of musical development -- which is in itself a memory-depended phenomenon.
The text in this piece, "Tract on Memory" by Harold Schimmel, is built as a series of thoughts about memory itself. The music of the piece reflects these thoughts through several techniques, which are quite similar to memory processes in our mind: repetitions, steadiness, randomness, order, narrative, lack of narrative.
Alongside Schimmel's text I have used three children folk songs in Arabic, German and Judeo-Spanish, as flickers of far-away memories. As in other vocal works of mine, the vocalist is required to use singing, murmuring and fragmentation of words. This time these techniques reflect not only my musical interest in language and voice, but also the processes that take place in our brain while we think and talk, remember and forget.
