Jean-Claude Roger Mbede is a 31-year-old Cameroonian student who is serving a three year prison sentence for "homosexuality and attempted homosexuality", both of which are criminalised in Cameroon. He is at risk of homophobic attacks and ill-treatment in prison.
Amnesty International considers Jean-Claude Roger Mbede to be a prisoner of conscience; imprisoned solely because of his real or perceived sexual orientation. His case highlights a long-standing pattern of arrests, detentions and trials of gay men and lesbian women in Cameroon.
Alice Nkom, who represents Jean-Claude, is a Cameroonian lawyer, well-known for her advocacy towards decriminalization of homosexuality in Cameroon.
