John Cappetta graduated from University of San Diego in 1983 with a bachelors degree in economics. As a Rotary Foundation Fellow, he completed one year of post-graduate study in Paris, France, and received his masters degree in business administration from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1986.

Cappetta spent the next two decades in New York and Connecticut. After spending four years at Citibank and two years at Credit Suisse, he was hired by AIG in 1992 to serve as a senior banker to the firms top corporate clients. In 1996, he became a managing director and was named head of the corporate client business. In 2001, he took over the remaining North American-based capital markets businesses, including foreign exchange, debt and equity capital markets and corporate finance and was appointed president of AIG Financial Securities. He retired from AIG in 2005.

Presently, Cappetta is a private equity investor and advisor through Cappetta Capital Partners. He is the principal shareholder and executive chairman of LJL Funding LLC, a San Diego-based real estate lending company and is a principal of DJM Capital Partners, a San Jose based commercial real estate investment firm. He is an active community leader as well, serving as co-chairman of the Rancho Santa Fe Education Foundation; as a trustee and chief financial officer of the Emilio Nares Foundation, a nonprofit organization providing services to families of children with cancer; and as a trustee of the Bishops School, an independent college preparatory school in La Jolla, Calif.
