Three Denver Zoo boat-billed herons, which hatched on March 11, recently fledged, meaning they left their nest for the first time. This is a significant stage in their young lives as their wings get stronger. Boat-billed herons are tropical wading birds native to Central and South America. They use their bills, which look like overturned boats, to scoop up shrimp and other bottom dwelling aquatic prey.
