You know, just as there is life in eternal heaven, there is external separation from God in a place the Bible calls Hell. I realize that Hell is not a popular subject today and is not a politically correct term. But according to the Bible, like Heaven, it is a real little old place. In fact, Jesus Christ spoke more about Hell than any other preacher in the Bible put together. You know why? Because Jesus Christ has seen it and He knows its reality. The last thing that he wants is for any person to die and to go there. In fact, He wants you and I to spend eternity with him in Heaven.

In Luke Chapter16, Jesus Christ told a true story that gives us a rare and behind-the-scene look at what happens when a person dies and goes to Hell. It's a story about a rich man with everything in this life and a beggar by the name of Lazarus who has nothing. One day, this poor man and the rich man died. The poor man whose name was Lazarus was immediately ushered into Heaven. You know, Lazarus didn't die and go to Heaven because he was poor but because he was saved. Although we own nothing in this life, we possess everything in the next life. When the rich man died, he immediately went to a place called Hades or Hell. The rich man didn't die and go to Hell because he was rich but because he was not saved. Although he possessed everything in this life, he lost it all in the next life. In fact, the Bible says in Luke 16:24, in Hell, the rich man looked up his eyes and being in torment, he cried out and he said "Father Abraham, have mercy upon me and send Lazarus that he might dip the tip of his finger in water and cool my tongue for I am being tormented in the flame. It is interesting that four times Jesus Christ describes Hell as a place of torment. And truly it is. In fact, Jesus Christ told us in another passage that the only relief that a person in hell will have is the grinding of teeth and shedding of tears. Yet many people today think Hell is nothing more than a big joke. They imagined it as an eternal party place where the bar never closes. I read recently that Keith Richards of Rolling Stones fame said that when I go to hell, I am going to party. It was the actor Woody Allen who once said that "Hell is the future abode of those who personally annoyed me." Many remember the famous song by John Lennon which said, "Imagine there is no Heaven. It is easy if you try. No hell below us, above us, only sky". Friends, such words, such thinking is tragic beyond words because Hell is no joke. It's a real old place reserved for men and women who died in their sins, never having placed their faith and their trusts in Jesus Christ. Malcolm Forbes, one of the world's wealthiest man, said just before he died. He said, "The thing I dread most about death is I know I would not be as comfortable as in the next life as I was in this life." Friends, that is true if you die without knowing Jesus Christ as your personal saviour. Friends, it is my prayer that you would come to place your faith and your trust in Jesus Christ who can save you from your sins and give to you the hope of Heaven. May the Spirit of God take the word of God and bless you today.
