This is no simulation, but a real measurement of the beam cross section. The beam splits up because HZB-physicists created a „double dell" in the harmonic potential, which confines the beam. They do this by changing the currents in the magnets. These experiments are useful for planning a variable pulse lenght storage ring, BESSY-VSR.
The experiment was done at the Metrological Light Source (MLS) at Physikalisch Technische Bundesanstalt (PTB) in the vicinity of BESSY II.
