I have started this mod 3 months ago but dropped it for lack of interest, and now I'm thinking about finishing and releasing it.

Brutal HeXen will be a complete revamp of HeXen's gameplay. It's not just more gore and fancy fire effects and particles. It takes the fighting to a whole new level, making the combat way more dynamic, brutal, realistic, and interesting. Enemies have smarter AI, different attacks, the melee enemies such as the Ettin can make some nasty tactics to attack you, retreat, etc.

In this video I am playing with Baratus, the Fighter. He is the only character (partially) done yet. For now he only has 2 weapons done.
The starting fists have been replaced by a non-magic powered Timon's Axe, and a shield. With alt fire you use the shield to block any frontal attacks (I still have to revisit it's code, because the shield sometimes bugs as seen in end of the video where an afrit kills me with a fireball even when I was blocking with the shield). The combat with the Axe is very dynamic. You can hold the fire button to make him hold the axe in a stance ready to strike. Pressing the fire button in the right moment right after the first attack ends unleashes a combo attack that deals double damage and gib enemies (it's a hard combo to do, and might need some training). Pressing the fire button right after you stop blocking unleashes a punch attack that will knock back and stun an enemy for a while.

The second weapon is the Thunder Crossbow. It replaces the Timon's Axe pickup. It's a slow and powerful ranged weapon that costs 4 blue mana per shot and can kill Ettins with 2 shots, and sometimes with 1 single shot.

I have plans to make the classes work well with each other in coop. The Fighter will be like a tank, the Priest will have both offensive and defensive spells, and the Mage will have the most long ranged magic explosive stuff. It's pretty interesting to imagine 3 players playing a coop of this in Zandronum, with one Fighter player blocking, the Priest and the Mage behind him, the priest regularly switching his spells from long ranged attacks to spells to heal the ground, and the mage behind everyone summoning thunder and blowing up shit.
