Archaeologist Dan Smith works his way through backfill and water at the bottom of a ca. 1650s well in order to retrieve artifacts deposited or lost into the well over 350 years ago. Do to the anaerobic or oxygen free conditions at this level, the artifacts survive in great condition. Soil saved from the well will later be analyzed for insect remains and seeds. The well is just 10 feet from the John Smith statue.
