Bas Jan 'Bas Jan' is the self-titled 1st release by this 3 piece London-based band.
Serafina Steer, who is normally known as a harpist/songwriter, started learning the bass guitar and writing for two voices, bass and drums with performance artist Jenny Moore in 2015. In search of cosmic triangulation, they recruited ex–Chromehoof violinist and composer Sarah Anderson, and the trio became Bas Jan - named after the Dutch conceptual artist Bas Jan Ader who was last seen setting out to sail across the Atlantic in 1975.
An album started brewing in December 2015 and was finished with the help of Leo Abrahams and Leafcutter John in 2016. During this time, Bas Jan played at The Serpentine Galleries, Brixton Academy, Village Underground; they were broadcast on Radio 3’s Late Junction, Marc Riley, Stuart Maconie; they recorded and performed at BFI with Jarvis Cocker for his soundtrack to Neil Gaiman’s ‘Likely Stories’ (released on Rough Trade).
