New York City, December 17--Not heeding a letter from Desmond Tutu pleading the OWS case, Rev. James Cooper of Trinity Church still refuses to allow OWS to set up a temporary site on its space at Sixth Avenue and Canal Street in downtown Manhattan, currently leased to the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, but not in use by LMCC. Nevertheless, several members of the local clergy from Judson Church and from the Council of Elders, including a bishop, do back the OWS request. They joined the D17 protest march from DuArte Square up Sixth Avenue and down Seventh Ave and were among the protesters who climbed over the fence enclosing the Trinity lot under debate. (They were later arrested). Occupy 2.0 launched with a noon rally at in the public part of DuArte Square that featured performances by the People's Puppets and the Occupus, representing the multi-tentacled corporation octopus. D17 celebrates the 24th birthday of Private Bradley Manning, whose hearing is currently underway; the third month of OWS in action and the one-year anniversary of Mohammed Bouazizi's self-immolation which led to the Tunisian uprising.
