"- Tif Tuf's a whole new couch grass. It's a hybrid couch grass, so similar to Santa Ana, but it's the first new hybrid couch grass that we've seen in over 30 years in Australia. It's a grass that's gonna bring benefits to us that we've been looking for: winter color, drought tolerance, wearability, these are the key things that we're looking for these days. The challenges that we face in sports field management is winter color retention. This grass has got that. Drought tolerance during the summer, reducing our inputs, less nutrient, less water. The only thing is increased mowing.
With the wearability of it, it will be a faster-growing grass, but we see that as a positive in the commercial sense, because we'll be able to grow through the damage and recover. Tif Tuf is a bit unique to the grasses that we've seen released in Australia over recent years. Most of the grasses we've had come to the market have been selections, natural selections. Tif Tuf's actually been bred through a fairly intensive breeding program at Georgia State University's Tifton campus. Over there, they've taken up to thirty thousand varieties of what they call Bermuda grass, and mixed them until they've gotten to the point where they've bred in disease resistance, pest resistance, winter color retention, high drought tolerance, wearability, all into this one grass that we're standing on here today which is Tif Tuf Bermuda.
So it's a really great progression in our field. I think it's a really great package to go for, for sports fields, golf courses, and even for amenity use around home, nature strips, back yards. If you look at our broader customer base, they're going to save money on water, all right? So their recurrent costs are gonna come down. They're gonna save money on fertilizer inputs. They're not gonna need as much nitrogen as they have in the past. So we've got less environmental impact and less financial cost in fertilizing. They're gonna have a greener, more usable surface. So you'll have an aesthetically more pleasing field, that's gonna hold up to more traffic. So if we can have a grass that can actually hold up to more wear and tear, all of a sudden those fields can be utilized more.
So rather than building more fields it might be a matter of changing to a grass that can actually handle the wear and tear more. So there's savings there not only in construction costs but it's also in efficiencies and making more use of the facility."
