No doubt, the recent 2012 Boac Bilabila Street Dance Competition is the most spectacular event staged in this Marinduque, Philippines town during the last four decades. It may well be that the now-popular Panagbenga and Sinulog festivals have influenced the Bilabila (this one celebrates the butterfly's life-cycle to promote the town and province as the "Butterfly Capital of the Philippines", but, but... one has to go slowly back to the 60's when it was widely known then that the only Philippine street pageant at that time that utilized costumes, masks, props and attracted the outside word for that Mardi Gras type of spectacle was none other than the Moriones of Marinduque - as staged in Boac with the Pugutan chase and all. The bigger towns and cities followed suit, inspired by the Moriones stree-pageant, that the idea of street pageants as tourist attractions sparked the creation of Ati-atihan (Aklan), Dinagyang (Iloilo), Sinulog (Cebu), MassKara (Bacolod City), Pintados (Leyte), Sangyaw (Tacloban), Panagbenga (Baguio), Ibalong (Legaspi City) and today, countless others in big or small towns in the entire country. That the creation of such festivals as tourist draws are no longer contested and no one would argue that they do help generate local economy. It has come full circle now to this town after all those years. Boac has finally arrived.

Thanks to the Municipality of Boac's Jingjing Garcia Loto for the Bilabila Street Dance photos.
