What makes different forms of writing unique? The length of the phrases, the attitude, the feel—the same sorts of elements that make drum rhythms unique. Demonstrating different drum beats for students helps them to appreciate the rhythm of words. Here, author Matthew Gollub enlivens an author assembly at an elementary school by demonstrating different sorts of rhythms: rock, jazz, waltz, boss nova or Latin. At the end he draws on a mix of these rhythms to show students how drummers can improvise spontaneously.
