On July 25th in the Longford Town Hall over 50 representatives of councils from around the state joined with tourism operators and other interested parties to launch the 'smartest new thing to happen to tourism in Tasmania': the Heritage Highway Tourism Region app.

The app provides locals and visitors to the Heritage Highway Region ((the Central Tasmania area covered by the Northern and Southern Midlands Councils, and Pontville in the Brighton Council area) with an easy way to rapidly access comprehensive information on the region's attractions, events, tours, businesses - with an emphasis on tourist related businesses eg. accommodation, eateries, speciality shops, services eg outlets for fuel, ATMS, public toilets, facilities eg. parks, picnic areas, BBQs, fishing spots and points of interest.

The project was funded through a partnership between the Northern Midlands Business Association (NMBA) and the Tasmanian Community Fund and Northern Midlands Council. The App software developer is Launceston based AD Belsham.

"The ultimate aim is promote economic growth by attracting more visitors to the region and holding them for longer -- thus increasing our share of the tourist dollar yield' said the NMBA Chairman Ian Goninon.

The project is receiving widespread praise eg. the CEO of the Tourism Industry Council Tasmania, Luke Martin, recently stated in the Examiner "It is really exciting--- they are ahead of the industry and will hopefully set an example for other regions around the state."

The app is available in three versions and is thus downloadable (free) to iphones, androids and ipads.

The NMBA wants to assist other tourism regions and like organisations and businesses to develop their own app, and to this end, the Association welcomes enquiries for the onselling of the app licence at a very reasonable price. The NMBA can be contacted on phone 1800 192 297 or email lorraine.green@nmc.tas.gov.au .
