If you do find yourself in the unfortunate position of getting pulled over for suspected DUI in Utah...

Promptly use your turn signal, slowly and safely pull over to the side of the road.

As with any time you are pulled over by police, stay in the car keep your hands on the wheel and wait for the police officer. Do not shuffle around.

Do not get out of your car unless your asked to do so.

When you open your window to speak to the police officer, give him or her a courteous greeting. Always follow their directions.

It is important to be polite. Do not act as though you have anything to hide or have done anything wrong.

When you are asked to produce your drivers license, registration and insurance card, stay calm and remember the police officer is watching to see just how well perform these actions.

It can not be stressed enough! DO NOT discuss where you were, whom you were with, what you have been doing or ANYTHING about drinking.

You may think it is a good idea to tell the officer you've only had one or two beers. Don't do it! They are not fooled by this common belief. Remember DO NOT discuss ANYTHING about drinking.

Do not argue with the police, instead comply with their requests.

You do not have the right to contact a DUI attorney or have a lawyer at this time. Chemical Tests - Blood Draw - Breath Analysis - Urine Analysis -Saliva Analysis. If you refuse a chemical test you may automatically have your license suspended for 18 months.

You do have the right to refuse field sobriety tests:

9 step walk and turn - Or the old walk a straight line test. In this test the person is asked to walk heel to toe in a straight line for nine steps.

One leg stand - The officer instructs the suspected DUI driver to stand on one foot, hands to their side, then raise the other foot up about 6 inches and count by 1000 until instructed to put their foot down.

Portable breath test - Mobile breathalyzer as opposed to a test taken at the police station.

Horizontal gaze test - Involves following an object with the eyes determine characteristic eye movement reaction.

It is not uncommon for sober people to fail the Utah field sobriety tests. They are more a test of your abilities as an an athlete or a test of coordination.

Your ability to past these tests is affected by:
The time of day
Poor balance
Medical conditions
Poor vision

Be warned that if you refuse to take the field sobriety test you may be arrested immediately.
