This paper summarises: the construction and development of the R101; its intended flight to India and crash; the relevant evidence of witnesses and expert witnesses to the Court of Inquiry; the mathematical modelling, by the National Physical Laboratory, of its final moments; and a new theory of the disaster based on the known failure of its elevator cable. This theory uses the same mathematical model as the NPL but is programmed for a modern computer using more sophisticated numerical methods. The new theory is shown to be simpler and more consistent with the physical evidence from the wreck.
